Obituary for George Byars

George Byars
George Newton Byars, 82, formerly of Big Creek, MS, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 3, 2018. Born January 26, 1936, in Big Creek, he was the son of the late Charlie Byars and the late Belle Hendrix Byars Burke. He was a retired welder, and was a member of Baldwyn First Baptist Church. He loved Gospel music and enjoyed attending Gospel concerts when he could. George’s family, like many people back then, was poor growing up. His family will always remember when he was in high school, he raised a cotton crop on his neighbor’s land. It was a good cotton year, and he made enough money to pay his Mother’s bills for a year, keeping none for himself. Being a hard working man with great character is what led George to become a United States Marine. He loved his country, and proudly served during the Korean War. Although he considered himself to be shy, he loved to sit around and talk. He could be found every Wednesday at Agnews Restaurant in Baldwyn, sipping on coffee, and discussing the latest news and gossip with his usual coffee shop group. A very kind and gentle man, he will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Pryor Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family.
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held Monday, March 5, 2018, at 2:00pm at Shiloh Baptist Church. There will also be a visitation on Monday, March 5, 2018 from 1:00pm until 2:00pm at the church. Bro. Joe Russell and Bro. Mark Longino will be officiating. Interment will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Calhoun City.
Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Hendrix, Mike Hendrix, Frank Burke, Guy Hendrix, Scotty Hendrix, and David Magness
He leaves behind his two daughters, Sandra Carwyle and her husband Jeremy of Pontotoc, MS, and Tammy Anderson and her husband Jason of Decatur, AL; three sisters, Nancy Burke Anderson, Deltona, FL; Betty Burke Cain, St. Inigoes, MD; and Dianne Burke Depelsmaeker of Sulphur Springs, TX; three grandchildren, Justin Anderson of Picayune, MS, Jordan Carwyle Dill, and William “Willie” Carwyle Dill, both of Pontotoc, MS; and also his beloved dog, JoJo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sandra Byars, a sister, Dell Burke, and two brothers, Charlie Byars and Tommy Burke.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
